Relations between Mongolia and Russia continue to improve following a visit to Ulaanbaatar by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. The cause to a meeting became events to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Khalkh Gol, where Soviet and Mongolian forces defeated the invading Japanese Kwantung Army in August 1939.

Seven Points: Ts.Elbegdorj and Mongolian-Russian Cooperation

Democratic Party candidate Tsakhia Elbegdorj won the presidential election at the end of May in Mongolia. The 46-year-old president is considered to be a pro-Western politician, and some experts predict that he will amend foreign policy of the country and will open relations with Russian companies to allow access to the rich bowels of the Mongolia. Ts.Elbegdorj talked about the prospects of cooperating with its neighbour state with the Russian information agency Interfax, and with the broadcast company Aist-TV. There were seven points that were highlighted during the interviews.

Russia and Mongolia: Firm Relationships

Relations between Mongolia and Russia continue to improve following a visit to Ulaanbaatar by Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. In addition to having already provided Mongolia with a US$300 million loan directed towards the agricultural sector, Moscow has also announced the creation of a joint venture with Ulaanbaatar to upgrade the latter’s railway infrastructure.

Russia and Mongolia: Geopolitical Cooperation

For many centuries Mongolia was a geopolitical object, widely seen as a buffer between Russia and China. Today the country is assuming a greater level of global economic importance. Not so long ago strategically important raw materials like uranium have been found. According to Mongolian
estimates, uranium reserves in the country amount to 60,000 metric tons. However, Russian experts have assessed Mongolia’s uranium reserves at 120,000-150,000 tons. Moscow remains one of Ulaanbaatar’s most important foreign trade partners, with Russia accounting for about a 20 percent share of Mongolia’s overall turnover total.

Mongolia economy: general overview

The World Bank’s Board has endorsed a new strategy of support for Mongolia as the country comes to terms with the short and long-term impacts of the global economic downturn.
A new interim strategy provides a framework of support for the next 18 months while economic conditions in Mongolia stabilize. Its goal is to support the Government of Mongolia to address urgent crisis needs while also addressing longer term reforms needed to reduce the impact of future shocks.
